Chapter Sixteen
NOON WEDNESDAY, HAWKE rolled into the Trembleyâs. He led Jack and Horse out of the trailer and put them in their paddock. He cleaned out the trailer and unhooked it from his work truck. Today was usually his day off. Now he had half a day off.
He headed to his apartment and took a long hot shower while Dog slept in his dog bed surrounded by his toys.
It was four oâclock by the time Hawke was dressed, hungry, and ready to head to Alder. He planned to have another chat with Mrs. Cusack. This time heâd try not to get on her bad side. An early dinner at the Firelight sounded like a good idea. He planned to eat alone and get more information.
On the drive from the trailhead, heâd placed a call to his sergeant requesting more background information on Mrs. Cusack and Leanne Welch.
Hawke walked out to get in his truck and found Darlene giving a lesson in the indoor arena.
âHawke, do you have another date? I donât think Iâve seen you clean up this nice more than three times a year and now itâs been three times in less than two weeks.â The twinkle in Darleneâs eyes wasnât missed on him.
âI do not have another date. I am not dating anyone. I cleaned up because Iâve been in the woods for four days.â He spun around to walk away.
âYou didnât happen to go by Charlieâs Hunting Lodge, did you?â The insinuation and merriment in her voice told him sheâd learned more about the woman sheâd seen him with at the Firelight.
He just waved his hand and kept on walking. She wasnât going to rile an answer out of him. His landlordsâ need to discover what he did on his off hours was both endearing and aggravating. Dog jumped into the back of the truck. Hawke closed the tailgate and climbed in the truck cab.
In Alder, he drove straight to the Firelight. There werenât as many vehicles parked in the lot. That meant heâd have more of a chance to visit with Mrs. Cusack and less people seeing him there.
Mrs. Cusack was at the hostess stand when he walked into the building. Her smile drooped as he walked up to her.
âYou never ate here before and yet, here you are again in less than a week.â She didnât move to take him to a seat.
âHow do you know Iâve not eaten here before? You didnât work here until your husbandâs death,â he said, knowing this wasnât the honey he needed to spread to get the answers he wanted.
âI guess you would know that if you had been here before,â she said, conceding and picking up a menu.
âIâm hungry, but I wouldnât mind if youâd sit with me for a bit and answer some questions that have been bothering me.â
She narrowed her eyes and led him to a booth in the back of the restaurant with only empty tables in the vicinity. âWhat can I get you to drink?â
âIâll have an iced tea, please.
