Between the bottles and the blankets, Gabby soon had all thirteen babies out of the pack ’n’ plays. A few of them were curled up asleep, others sucked down their snacks, and the rest were mesmerized by an impromptu puppet show Gabby and Zee were performing with stuffed animals pulled from Gabby’s knapsack. Finally, the babies were happy.

Then Zee twitched her nose.

“Do you smell that, Gabs? ’Cause it smells like—”

She didn’t even finish before one of the babies started howling.

“Diaper change,” Gabby said. “I’m on it.”

Then the stench exploded in magnitude and every single baby started to cry.

“Are you on it for all of them?!” Zee cried over the noise. “’Cause this is like a mass pandemic!”

The doorbell rang.

“Yes!” Zee cried. She jumped up and ran to the door.

“Zee, stop!” Gabby called after her. “You don’t know who it is! You’re not even supposed to be here!”

“I know exactly who it is!” Zee called back.

Gabby heard the door open, then shut again. A moment later, Satchel walked into the living room, sweaty and disheveled and panting.

“I rode here as fast as I could. You said it was an emergency.”

The flop of hair that normally fell over his face stuck straight up from a windblown ride on his rickety pizza-delivery bike. He gaped at the room full of screaming babies. “Oh, snap!”

“Satchel?” Gabby asked, amazed.

“I called him when you went to get the baby cages,” Zee explained quickly. “I didn’t give him any details. I know it’s not cool, but he’s way better with babies than I am and you need some major help.” Zee sniffed the rancid air. “Especially now.”

Satchel threw off his jacket with the urgency of a surgeon walking into an operating room. “You were right to call me, Zee. Let’s start.”

Gabby furrowed her brows and looked at Zee, who shrugged.

“Satch, you don’t think there’s anything weird about this situation?” Gabby asked.

“What, that you’re babysitting for a day care?” Satchel asked.

“A day care at someone’s house where all the babies look exactly alike?” asked Zee.

Satchel shrugged off the question and rolled up his sleeves. “I’ll start changing diapers. Where’s the supplies? Oh—baby bag.”

As Satchel swept up the bag and got to work changing the first baby he saw, Gabby thought he looked almost heroic. She never would have said yes to calling Satchel, so she was seriously glad Zee hadn’t asked. It was a massive relief to have someone else who knew how to handle babies. It let her relax a little and freed her mind to think.

“Satch, wait,” she said. “I think we need more than just a diaper change. We need a system. Some way to change, feed, and nap thirteen babies at the exact same time, or we’ll never be able to keep all of them happy.”

“You’re right,” Satchel agreed. “But there’s only three of us and thirteen of them. If we want to do everything at once, we need thirteen of us.” Suddenly his eyes lit up. “Oh, snap! We need a replicator machine!
