MEC deployments require compute resources at deployment locations. MEC platform suppliers could technically provide and manage the physical infrastructure but the greater opportunity is tied to full integration with the operator’s NFV infrastructure. The process of building and decentralizing network data centers has begun among top operators, but the process is moving slowly and is limited to a dozen or so core locations that cannot fully exploit MEC’s capabilities, such as delivery of low-latency applications.
