Cooking with My Husband—Our Favorite Recipes

It was a long Labor Day weekend, so I challenged my husband to a Bread Bake-Off Contest. The only rule was that the bread recipes we used had to include yeast. My husband found a Hearty Wheat Bread recipe on the back of a package of gourmet flour. And I decided to make two entries: a Northern Maine Oatmeal Bread (a recipe I’d never tried before) and a Daisy Braid from an old, reliable, sweet dough recipe.

One of the first steps in my husband’s Hearty Wheat Bread recipe instructed him to warm up the mixing bowl, so of course he got out the hair dryer, turned it on full blast, and aimed it at the inside of the bowl (everyone interprets a recipe a little differently). Okay, I admit it worked. The hair dryer did warm up the bowl, but maybe he should have used the low setting on the dryer, because his bread didn’t rise—at all. Yeast can be tricky. If the water you add is too hot, it kills the yeast, and if it’s too cold, nothing happens.

After the first bite of my Oatmeal Bread and Daisy Braid rolls, my husband awarded me the Bread Bake-Off Blue Ribbon and suggested it would be better if I didn’t even taste-test his bread. The poor guy’s Hearty Wheat Bread turned out so hearty that in his words, “If we ever decide to build that addition to our house, we can make the bricks out of this dough.”
