Chapter 11

Pick and Mix!

Jay and George ambled back to the garden with its throng of people all seemingly busy with their own discussions and enjoyments. As they sat down at their table, Jay popped a hand in his pocket, pulled out a note and passed it to Pete. He asked if he would nip to the bar and get another round of drinks. Pete nodded, confirmed everyone’s order and set off for the bar. George’s face was one of those that could not hide a secret and now was no exception. Eyes dancing and sparkling with laughing, turned up corners, mouth quivering just waiting for the question it wanted so much to answer and a body that seemed to be covered with goose pimples as it gyrated around on the bench seat. David had a face full of curiosity. He could see something was different with George, but did not know what it was or what question to ask, so both sat in frustrated silence. Before David could find the right question to begin the question and answer session George so longed for, Pete arrived back with a tray full of drinks and packets of nibbles, “to keep starvation away,” as he put it.

“George, how many commandments do you think David has broken?” questioned Jay.

George’s face drained and the exhilarated look vanished. George looked at Jay deflated, like a bouncy castle that had lost its air, his shoulders folded and sank. He looked at David with a pained look that said, ‘I do not really want to answer that question’. David’s face was a picture of shock, concern and question; what was his friend going to say? George looked to Pete for help and then back to Jay, seeing faces with grins bordering on those of clowns.

“What do you think is so funny?” was his terse question.

“For the moment you have got the wrong David! But ultimately it is a question you need to ask yourself and consider what you do with the answer. Try King David!” was Jay’s gentle and compassionate reply.

George rose centimetres in height as the burden was seemingly taken from his shoulders. David gulped his drink trying to settle his over-stretched nerves. George nervously responded, “I guess most of them.”

“Hmm!” was Jay’s response. “OK! I’ll ask the question in reverse. Which ones did he not break?” George hung his head and just shook it in a defeated and dejected fashion. All his hopes, all his anticipation, all his jubilation as he returned to the table was gone in an instant.

“I suppose through his life he must have broken pretty much all of them. He certainly committed adultery, stole from the temple, abused his position, committed murder by proxy and wanted things that were not his to have. I dare say he was not faithful to Yahweh as well.”

“That’s a fair list,” responded Jay. “What was my Father’s response towards David’s actions?”

“Didn’t God kill his child and give David much trouble from his son in later years?”

“Put simply, you are right, but that is not all.
