Chapter Fourteen
â¡
Aunt Polly was quiet while Gus helped her into the Jeep. From the backseat, his dad greeted her. As soon as she buckled herself in, Gus shut the passenger door and rounded the car to the driverâs seat.
He hadnât even pulled out of her driveway before she started in.
âYou have some nerve, asking Wanda to talk to me about moving.â
In the rearview mirror, Gus and his dad shared a Here we go look.
âThat came from a place of love for you,â his father explained.
Turning her head toward him, Aunt Polly frowned. âYou were in on this, too?â
âNo, but I approve. Weâre worried about your welfare. We want you to be safe and taken care of. From everything Iâve heard about Wanda, she shares our concerns.â
âSo Gus has mentioned her to you.â A smile replaced Aunt Pollyâs frown. âWhat did he tell you?â
âThat you got mad when she tried to talk to you,â Gus said. âSheâs upset.â
The frown returned. âFilled you in, did she? I canât believe the two of you went behind my back, talking about whatâs best for me, as if I was too feeble-minded to think for myself. Iâm so angry I might cancel my Wednesday hair appointment.â
Wanda worried about that very thing. âDonât blame her,â Gus said. âShe didnât even want to do it.â
âThen she shouldnât have. I wish you would all stop carping at me.â Aunt Polly crossed her arms, set her jaw, and stared out the passenger window.
Gus bit back a few choice words. He wasnât about to apologize, when the fault lay with her own stubbornness.
No one spoke again until they were a block from The Rogue, a Dennyâs-like restaurant Aunt Polly enjoyed.
She finally angled her head at him. âThere is a way for both you and Wanda to get back in my good graces.â
Gus eyed her. âWhatâs that?â
âGo on a date.â
No effing way. Their attraction to each other was too damn dangerous. âYou donât get to dictate who I date,â he growled.
âFine. Iâll cancel the appointment.â
âYou wouldnât.â
âOh, no? Try me.â
He swore under his breath. âSheâll turn me down.â
âWhy would she do that?â his father asked.
Not about to get into the ins and outs of the situation, Gus shrugged. âSheâs been hurt, and sheâs taking a rest from dating.â
So was he.
âPish posh.â Aunt Polly dismissed the words with an airy wave of the hand. âAnyone with eyes can see what a handsome man you are, Gus. Youâve had plenty of girlfriends, and you know how to woo a woman. Figure out something Wanda wants and offer it to her. Suggest a place sheâd like to go.â Without pausing, she dropped a new threat. âIf she refuses you, then I just might find a new hairdresser at a different salon. The only way Iâll forgive her is if she agrees to a date with you.â
âThatâs not fair.â He gave her a black look, which she ignored. She knew sheâd pinned him to the mat.
Want to or not, he needed to ask Wanda out, and she needed to go.
