Chapter Fourteen

‡

Aunt Polly was quiet while Gus helped her into the Jeep. From the backseat, his dad greeted her. As soon as she buckled herself in, Gus shut the passenger door and rounded the car to the driver’s seat.

He hadn’t even pulled out of her driveway before she started in.

“You have some nerve, asking Wanda to talk to me about moving.”

In the rearview mirror, Gus and his dad shared a Here we go look.

“That came from a place of love for you,” his father explained.

Turning her head toward him, Aunt Polly frowned. “You were in on this, too?”

“No, but I approve. We’re worried about your welfare. We want you to be safe and taken care of. From everything I’ve heard about Wanda, she shares our concerns.”

“So Gus has mentioned her to you.” A smile replaced Aunt Polly’s frown. “What did he tell you?”

“That you got mad when she tried to talk to you,” Gus said. “She’s upset.”

The frown returned. “Filled you in, did she? I can’t believe the two of you went behind my back, talking about what’s best for me, as if I was too feeble-minded to think for myself. I’m so angry I might cancel my Wednesday hair appointment.”

Wanda worried about that very thing. “Don’t blame her,” Gus said. “She didn’t even want to do it.”

“Then she shouldn’t have. I wish you would all stop carping at me.” Aunt Polly crossed her arms, set her jaw, and stared out the passenger window.

Gus bit back a few choice words. He wasn’t about to apologize, when the fault lay with her own stubbornness.

No one spoke again until they were a block from The Rogue, a Denny’s-like restaurant Aunt Polly enjoyed.

She finally angled her head at him. “There is a way for both you and Wanda to get back in my good graces.”

Gus eyed her. “What’s that?”

“Go on a date.”

No effing way. Their attraction to each other was too damn dangerous. “You don’t get to dictate who I date,” he growled.

“Fine. I’ll cancel the appointment.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“Oh, no? Try me.”

He swore under his breath. “She’ll turn me down.”

“Why would she do that?” his father asked.

Not about to get into the ins and outs of the situation, Gus shrugged. “She’s been hurt, and she’s taking a rest from dating.”

So was he.

“Pish posh.” Aunt Polly dismissed the words with an airy wave of the hand. “Anyone with eyes can see what a handsome man you are, Gus. You’ve had plenty of girlfriends, and you know how to woo a woman. Figure out something Wanda wants and offer it to her. Suggest a place she’d like to go.” Without pausing, she dropped a new threat. “If she refuses you, then I just might find a new hairdresser at a different salon. The only way I’ll forgive her is if she agrees to a date with you.”

“That’s not fair.” He gave her a black look, which she ignored. She knew she’d pinned him to the mat.

Want to or not, he needed to ask Wanda out, and she needed to go.
