Claudette suddenly sat very upright, an alarmed look on her face. She muttered some French words to Madame Legrand.

“Claudette asks if we hear shouting?” Madame Legrand said to Elizabeth. “Do you hear anything?”

All three women sat very still, straining to listen.

“This is no good,” Elizabeth said, running to the side of the barn. “I cannot hear a thing over there.” She pressed her ear to a crack in the wood.

Madame Legrand and Claudette did the same.

“I think I hear something,” Madame Legrand said, her eyebrows high on her forehead. “Could it be your young man? Or a team of rescuers?”

Claudette exclaimed something delightedly in French.

“Something is definitely bothering the group,” whispered Madame Legrand. “They are arguing amongst themselves. One says he needs to ‘take the man out’. I can only assume someone has entered the farm who should not be here.”

“Who is it?” Elizabeth cried. A rush of excitement almost bowled her over. “Oh my goodness. Could it be my Mr. Darcy?”

The sound of angry French discussions between a large group of men was now too loud to ignore. They could have heard it from anywhere in the barn.

“They still speak of ridding themselves of someone. There must have been an intruder,” Madame Legrand said. “How intriguing.”

The shouting reached a crescendo. To their horror, it was silenced by a single gunshot.

“Oh…” Madame Legrand murmured. She put her arm around Elizabeth and Claudette.

“Qui est-ce?” Claudette whispered.

“Who was it?” Elizabeth asked. “Who did they shoot?”

Dread splashed over her like a bucket of cold water.

“I don’t know,” Madame Legrand said. “But whoever it was, he will not trouble these men again.”

They huddled together, still pressed against the barn wall. The men outside remained silent.
