Zoey

1 year later

I never really belonged anywhere.

Everywhere I went, I felt like I was out of place.

But I found home. It was very, very brief, but it was the most beautiful home I ever lived in.

His arms.

His strong arms that held me so tightly and made me feel safe and treasured. He held me like I was a fragile thing. That was before he knew that I was a poisoned arrow aimed straight at his heart.

I bet he despises me now.

I bet he never thinks about me or the memories we shared.

If I could erase the hurt I caused to him, I would. I want to take back all the damage I caused to his life.

Maybe if we met in different circumstances, things would have gone differently.

If I was a normal girl, and he wasn’t a Prince.

If I didn’t have bad intentions, and if he didn’t love me like the ocean tides love the moon.

My phone rings, bringing me back to the present moment. I stop walking and take a seat on the nearest park bench.

It’s a breezy day. Birds are chirping away in the distance.

I fish my phone out from my bag, and smile big when I see who’s calling. I was waiting for her.

“Hey,” I say.

“Hi,” she huffs.

“Elena.” I know exactly why she’s mad at me.

“Zoey.”

“Do you have something you want to say?” I ask gently.

“A lot of colorful words, actually,” she says. “Why the hell did you keep your phone switched off?”

I sigh, “I went to bed early.”

“Really?”

“Yes, Laney. I was in bed.” I don’t tell her the part about how I cried myself to sleep.

“Okay,” she says grudgingly. And then softly, she adds, “Happy birthday.”

“Thank you, Laney.” Something that’s tightly shut in my heart blooms a little, peeking its head out.

Truth is, I have a lot of great things going on in my life. I don’t know why I keep pining over the one thing I can’t have. The one person.

“I had this whole thing planned. All of our friends were here, and we were throwing a party on your behalf. We were going to video call you and stuff.”

“Our friends?” I tease.

Elena is a social butterfly. She loves being around people. Unlike me. I’m content with just being in bed wearing my pajamas all day.

“You know what I mean.”

“I got the cake though,” I say, changing the topic. It was a dark chocolate cake with a filling of fresh strawberries. “Thank you for that.”

“Was it good? I honestly had no way of knowing. I went by its picture on the website.”

“Second best cake I ever had,” I say.

She gasps. “The first place better go that one I made you for your sixteenth birthday.”

“You managed to burn most of that thing,” I laugh. The edges were charred and the inside was gooey. Not the good kind of gooey either.

“Do you have something you dare to say?”

“Elena Winters, you shouldn’t be allowed in the kitchen.”

We’re polar opposites of each other. I’m naturally good at baking, and other creative things.
