WHAT TO REMEMBER AS YOU MOVE AHEAD . . .
Progress, not perfection. From the very beginning, set aside any perfectionism. It will not serve youâneither as a knitter nor as a creative entrepreneur. Make small goals, then take the time to recognize and celebrate when you meet them. Feeling overwhelmed? Make the goals smaller. Ask yourself, what is the smallest possible step I can take toward my goals today? Maybe itâs writing one word. Making one stitch. Some days, maybe itâs just getting out of bed. Acknowledge that any progress is just thatâprogress.
You have more energy than you realize. The human capacity for endurance and achievement is boundless. You have deep wells of energy inside you that have yet to be tapped. When life comes out of nowhere and bitch-slaps you, when fear takes over and your mind is spinning and you canât imagine a future let alone how you will get through this day, know that this too shall pass. And whatâs more, âthisâ has the potential to become the catalyst for your greatest contribution, for the dream you havenât even begun to dream yet.
Padlock your resolve. Before you begin your journey or take the next step, dig deep. Muster all of that strength lurking inside you. Put your plan, your vision, and your big audacious goals into words and write them down, then hang them up somewhere you can refer to them again and again. Take that resolve and make it real. Lock it in and throw away the key. So when it is testedâand trust me, it will be, over and over againâyouâll always have a place to come back to and stoke the fire that got you started in the first place.
Make sure itâs a good deal for everyone. The seemingly insignificant deal you make today might become the seed that grows into the partnership that defines your career. This is one of the most important ways you can exercise your empathy muscle. Put yourself in their shoes first, then take action accordingly.
Advocate for yourself. When you ask for that raise, or raise that price, youâre committing an act of self-acceptance. Every single time the boss grants that raise, or the customer pays that price, itâs validating not just your worth, but your creativity. That validation feeds further creativity. Words flow. Stitches fly. The creative fire is stoked, again and again and again. Donât douse your own spark before it even has the chance to catch.
