We continued our descent to the farm and through the maze of buildings. I tramped along behind the man and silently and grudgingly acknowledged that he may have saved my life. The air was freezing now and the wind was hurling minute balls of ice. The rate at which the weather was turning would most certainly have caused me to have massive frostbite on my limbs at best and my frozen body being discovered the next day at worst. Even though I dreaded what lay ahead I was thankful for my unwilling rescuer.

I followed the man up into a square courtyard and onto a large wrap around style porch. The man pressed the door bell and almost instantly Amelia opened the huge double doors. When she saw me, she was at once shy and yet fully concerned about my wellbeing. She took my wet vest, hat, and gloves, and brought a huge blanket for my shoulders. I had begun to shake again, and she talked quietly to reassure me. She quickly removed my shoes and had me sit close to a huge fireplace where the warmth cascaded outward to help me control my trembling. I was on a floral sofa with lots of comfortable pillows. The room was richly furnished and I noticed many plants and other decor that didn’t fit with the family that I knew. I wondered at this odd departure from the mountain culture. While Hattie and Grace did not lack any modern comforts, their home was an obvious tribute to the land and family. This house was definitely not lacking in style and decor. While it wasn’t contemporary, it was definitely not the norm for the mountain.

I was thankful that no questions were asked about how I came to be here. Amelia only ministered to me, making hot, sweet tea, and coaxed me to sip on it. When I tasted the stuff, I frowned. “What is this?” I asked.

“Hit’s tilly chamomile. Hit don’t tase too great, but it kin stop the pneumonia from comin’ on.” She smiled and nodded at me, her sweet eyes glowing from the joy she found in being kind to someone else.

“Th-Thank you, Amelia. I didn’t realize I was so-soo c-c-cold! What time is it?”

“Hits ‘bout leven.”

I jumped. “Oh my goodness! I have to call Aunt Grace! Hattie will be ready to kill me!”

Amelia giggled. “Grady done called ‘em. You jest be still and git warm. You can’t go nowhur tonight. You gonna’ stay here and I’ll take you back ‘round to them darlin’ ladies tomar. Weather’s got real bad and youz lucky Jess fount you! Angela girl, you coulda’ froze to death out there! Laudy, that woulda’ been turrible!” She hugged herself and leaned toward the fireplace.

As my body began to get warm, I could feel sensation returning to my feet and hands. They burned and tingled mercilessly. As much as I wanted to hold them to the fire light, I knew that it would hurt more than the gradual warming that Amelia was encouraging.
