Knowledge
Our data rarely allowed us to determine the knowledge base from which a mother made her parenting decisions. However, we divided this construct into two domains—formal academic education and effective parenting skills education—and made inferences accordingly.
Given the limited financial resources of the mothers in this category, one might speculate that the number of years they spent in formal academic settings was minimal. In general, maltreating parents have less formal education than nonmaltreating parents. One study revealed that neglectful mothers were less likely to have completed high school. At the beginning of the study, only 11 percent had completed high school compared with 32 percent of non-neglecting mothers.17 In 1998, the overall high school completion rates for young adults ages 18 to 24 was 85 percent, a small decline from the 86 percent in 1997.18
Mothers with limited education may be less inclined or lack the capacity to seek out reading materials to help them parent. In practical terms, they may have less knowledge about effective parenting strategies and/or knowledge of child development on subjects ranging from how to appropriately secure a child’s car seat in place to how to effectively respond to a crying infant. These mothers also lack the financial resources necessary to readily purchase books, audiocassettes, videos, and the like, or attend seminars to help them acquire the skills necessary to make their parenting interventions more effective. Presumably, if they do happen to have extra money, they likely have more immediate needs.
