Of the 138 sections of the Doctrine and Covenants, 135 come through Joseph Smith, one comes through Brigham Young, and one comes through Joseph F. Smith (Joseph Smith's nephew, the Church's sixth president). The other section is a eulogy for Joseph and Hyrum Smith (his brother). As the Church has grown, direct, scriptural revelation that applies to the entire church has decreased dramatically. The most recent addition to the Doctrine and Covenants came in 1981, when the 1978 announcement extending priesthood to all worthy male Church members was added as an “official declaration.”

Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) has been much more willing to add sections to its version of the Doctrine and Covenants, with a total of 166. Other Mormon-rooted denominations, such as the Strangites, the Temple Lot group, and the Cutlerites, stick with earlier versions of the Doctrine and Covenants.
