The Talmage speech was also published in the Church’s official magazine for the Sunday Schools, the Instructor, 100, No. 12 (December 1965): 474-477, and 101, No. 1 (January 1966): 9-11,15. The order of topics was considerably rearranged in this publication, however, without editorial notification to the reader. Roberts’s manuscript The Truth, The Way, The Life was eventually published by two different publishers, with a series of analytical essays by modern scholars, in 1994. The essay by James B. Allen titled “The Story of The Truth, The Way, The Life” gives an excellent summary of the manuscript’s history. See The Truth, The Way, The Life: An Elementary Treatise on Theology, 2d ed., edited by John W. Welch, (Provo, Utah: BYU Studies, 1996).

Interested readers will find further related information in the book Can Science Be Faith-Promoting? edited by Stanley Larson (Salt Lake City, UT: Blue Ribbon Books, 2001). This work contains some sixty-seven pages of correspondence between Elder James E. Talmage’s eldest son and intellectual/spiritual heir, Sterling B. Talmage, and various Church leaders—primarily Elder Talmage, Elder Joseph Fielding Smith, Elder John A. Widtsoe, and President Heber J. Grant.

There has been some minor manufactured controversy over whether this speech (Document D) was really approved by the First Presidency for publication. They were not adopting it as doctrine, of course, only ensuring that a position of neutrality was maintained. In his 1931 journal, Elder Talmage summarized their decision as follows.
