Ten

Lexie sank deeper into the bucket seat of Theo’s sports car. She glanced sideways at him. His eyes were wide and his body tense. Her admission had made an impact. She groaned inwardly and fixed her gaze on the trees alongside the road as if they were the most fascinating she had ever seen.

What’s the matter with me? How could I have been so careless?

She had all but admitted to Theo that she loved him! With the commotion of leaving Piper, moving to a new location, living with Kassia, and renewing her friendship with Theo, Lexie hadn’t thought through the repercussions of a new romantic relationship. Yet no matter how hard she tried to resist, she seemed to be chasing Theo full throttle.

Her thoughts turned to Piper. What kind of mother would she be if she weren’t fully committed to her daughter, especially since she had been responsible for her father’s death? No way would she commit to any man who didn’t love Piper.

But you haven’t given Theo a chance to love her, have you?

Lexie swallowed. She couldn’t tell how Theo was handling the news. Always the gentleman, he would naturally offer to drive her to the hospital. She couldn’t read through his tight expression as he concentrated on the road or figure out what his feelings were—toward her or the idea of Piper.

The knot grew in her throat. But what was she afraid of? Maybe she wasn’t fearful for herself, but for Curt and his memory?

Will Theo try to take Curt’s place in Piper’s life? Or am I jealous of anyone who might take part of Piper away from me?

Now you’re being as self-centered as Theo!

She let out a groan.

“Is my driving that bad?” Theo asked.

She felt embarrassed he had heard her. “Not so far.”

“So far so good then.” Theo pointed to the exit sign for Route 1 to Raleigh. “Is this it?”

“Yes. This is the one.”

Lexie thanked the Lord silently for Theo’s graciousness—and for their imminent arrival at the hospital.

Only forty miles now.

The hospital. She knew her job offered some type of health insurance, but Lexie hadn’t studied the policy enough to know the details. Besides, had she been working there long enough for her benefits to start?

A picture of the pile of bills on her desk passed, unwanted, through her mind. She shook her head to dismiss the image as she shut the car door behind her and walked toward the hospital’s pediatric unit.

Lexie swallowed hard to fight the dryness in her throat. She wished she had the courage to take Theo’s hand. She longed for his supportive touch, but reaching out for his comfort seemed too much to ask at the moment.

Lord in heaven, please let Piper be okay.

She stepped quietly into the room. Her mother was reading the newspaper in the only chair. Even though the hour was late, Piper sat up in bed, watching television. She held a stuffed bear Lexie didn’t recognize. She guessed the toy was a gift from her parents. To Lexie’s relief, Piper looked like the happy little girl she was, full of energy.
