Chapter Nine

Sutton entered Icing's and ordered a peppermint mocha for Holly and a large black coffee for himself, adding chocolate-filled croissants and blueberry muffins. He thanked Faye, not answering any of her pointed questions about who he was picking up breakfast for, and left with a smile and a wave.

His step lighter than he remembered it being in a long time, he pulled into the parking lot of Mrs. Claus's General Store before heading to Holly's. A quick stop and he'd be ready for anything a prepared boy scout could need.

Mooseletoe didn't open until ten and he planned to be there in plenty of time for Holly and him to start the day the way they should have ended it last night.

The bell over the door rang as he entered the general store. He hollered a greeting for Sally as he made a beeline for the personal hygiene aisle. He should have headed to Fairbanks for these items as everyone would know that he was having sex with someone by the end of the day. Hell, they'd know by lunch. But for once, he didn't care.

He grabbed the biggest box of condoms, not caring that they came in florescent colors that resembled Christmas lights. His eye caught on a pack of intensifying, cherry-flavored lubricant and added that to his purchase too. He headed to the cash register and set the items down in front of Sally, almost daring her to comment.

A twinkle entered her eye as she rang them up, but she didn't remark on anything other than the storm that still had North Pole smothered under a blanket of snow. "Did you find everything okay?" she asked tongue in cheek.

"Yes. Actually, no. Toss in a box of those dark-chocolate-covered cherries. In fact, make it two boxes." The idea of feeding Holly the gooey, dark sweetness quickened his blood.

"You got it, Chief." She'd just finished ringing him up when the overpowering scent of lilies soured his stomach.

"Well, well, well," Mia drawled from behind him. "You are a hard man to reach. Though, now I can see why you haven't returned my calls."

Slowly he turned toward her, his stomach clenching with dread.

Mia stood there decked out in black high-heeled boots, which would do nothing to keep her feet warm and, most likely, would twist an ankle on the ice outside. A calf-length red cape wrapped around her shoulders, saying more about her love for fashion than survival. Her coal-black hair rained down her back, swept away from her face with jeweled combs, accentuating her white skin and high cheekbones. Lips painted the same dark red as her wool cape accentuated her blue eyes, making them sparkle hard and cold in her perfect face. Mia was stunning. But he'd learned the hard way not to be fooled by a pretty face.

"It couldn't be because I don't want to talk to you, could it?"

"Now, Sutton, I never figured you for rude," she declared with a twist of her lips.

"And I never figured you as the type to renege on promises.
