Zoey’s bakery was full as Doris’s perpetually annoyed face came to the counter. “I thought you were a witch and all magical.”

“Um, I am,” Zoey said, not knowing where Doris was going with this.

“Then why are you burning your muffins?”

“I don’t have any muffins in the oven,” Zoey said a moment before a wave of fear hit at the same time the screaming started.

“Fire!” Maribelle yelled.

The bakery emptied out and Zoey froze at the sight in front of her. A pyre was set up with wood around it. A witch was tied to it and fire consumed her, nearly in an instant. Zoey couldn’t see who it was as Agnes let loose with her water power to squelch the fire at the same time as other water witches moved into action. They weren’t alone. Maribelle and other humans shoved past with fire extinguishers in hand. Off in the distance, the sounds of the lone fire engine roared to life. It was too late, though. The witch couldn’t be saved. The black smoke curled into the air and Zoey felt it like a punch to the gut as the smoke formed letters. You’re next.

Zoey felt the fear shoot through her body as she began to tremble. A witch had been burned right on Main Street and they hadn’t been able to save her. She was too far gone by the time anyone was alerted.

Zoey smelled the burnt flesh, smelled the ash, and smelled the dark magic. It was rotten and foul and smelled like the death it had just delivered. Through the chaos, Zoey heard the screams of terror. Heard the tears of pain. Heard the laughter of evil.

“Sweetness!” Slade was by her side with his arm wrapped around her. “It’s okay, breathe.”

It was then Zoey realized she was shaking. Not from fear as she had thought, but from anger so deep she felt it in her soul. She felt a darkness in her heart unlike anything she’d ever felt before. She wanted revenge. She wanted death. She wanted utter destruction.

The unity that was created last night was gone. Witches pulled away from the humans to form a huddle on one side of the street. They looked fearfully at the humans as talk of leaving Moonshine Hollow to hide was whispered about.

Justin walked forward from the crowd of humans. He walked across the street and straight to Phoebe. “Phoebe, I fell in love with you the first time I saw you smile. You made me the person I am today with your goodness and your kindness. You didn’t laugh at me when I was at my lowest. You helped me up and gave me purpose. I’ll fight to protect you from whoever or whatever did that. I am lucky to have you in my life. I love you, Phoebe.”

Tears streamed down Phoebe’s cheeks as her friends held her protectively as if Justin might set her on fire at any minute. “Oh Justin, I love you too!”

Phoebe broke from her friends and threw herself into Justin’s arms.
