Chapter 18

Zar, Kage, Andrew, and I stood in the circular storage room below the gatehouse. It was a sort of basement being used to warehouse things like folding tables, banners, office supplies, extension cords, empty coolers, and other odds and ends from castle events.

Andrew had been using his phone for the light and run down the battery faster than he’d expected. Now he and I had the only two small flashlights left between us and Kage, who had no phone at all, carried my keychain. In our three feeble lights the space felt close and oppressive, the ceiling just about touching Kage’s head.

Before the four of us, Jason sat against the plain stone wall like any other, leaning his shoulder into it.

We’d studied the room in detail, felt over every inch of the wall in particular where he’d kept indicating, examined the floor, and carefully shifted the stuff around.

Still, Jason stubbornly nosed one spot in the wall and waited for us to take appropriate action. What action? What had he found? What did he want with that wall that was exactly like the others?

“Blimey, Jay,” Andrew said after a very long time of this, as we all faced Jason once more. “What are you on about? No way to get through even if you have something.”

“Jed picked up the same, didn’t he?” I asked. “A scent at a wall? No way in? That can’t be coincidence. There must be underground rooms, something right on the other side. But where’s the entrance?”

“Start looking between here and the spot Jed hit on below the castle?” Zar said with his one-shouldered shrug.

“Maybe … but what are we looking for?” I asked.

“A door,” Kage said.

“Thank you.” I glared at him.

Andrew stepped to the wall. He pressed his nose to it as if to give it a kiss. He stood there a moment, then sank to his knees, eventually crouching all the way, face at the floor.

“Well, bugger,” Andrew muttered and sat back on his heels, facing Jason.

Zar went over to sniff the wall as well. He frowned. “It doesn’t make sense…” He bent forward, leaning partway down the wall.

Jason turned his head casually toward his crotch, nostrils twitching. Zar kneed him in the muzzle. Jason yanked away but didn’t even yelp, not seeming troubled by the blow. He only shook his head. I’d seen Jed punch him on two occasions—although not actually “seen” one that happened through a trailer door—and both times Jason had laughed. Yet he fell apart over a rat bite?

Jason sneezed.

“They’re here,” Zar said quietly.

Andrew nodded.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“We can smell them,” Andrew said. “If it was a phantom whiff…” Shaking his head. “But it’s more.”

“Cassia.” Zar beckoned me over. “Try it.”

“I don’t have the nose you do.” And I didn’t want Jason’s nose on me either. Jason still sat against the wall, leaning into it, looking bored.

I was noticing this posture when Kage repeated, “A door.”

I glanced at him.

Kage stood with his arms crossed in front of his chest, as he had for some minutes, frowning at Jason, who gazed calmly back.
