CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“You couldn’t have fucking warned me?”

The words shot out of Benedict as soon as they closed the door to the suite where his father was housed. Sloane winced at the force of the words and wished herself far away. She exchanged glances with Trent Nichols, her alpha’s guard for this Council session. His eyes were wide, as if unsure what to do next. He was a strong enforcer and had been responsible for the relations between the town and the Pack, stationed at the bar in town, the Salty Seadog. He felt the loss of their Alpha’s daughter keenly, since she had been kidnapped after leaving the bar one night. Like all of them, he felt like he’d failed—failed Kayleigh, failed the Pack, and personally failed their Alpha. They were all looking for redemption, yet somehow, they were all feeling in over their heads at this Council meeting.

Right now, she was in the room with two stronger dominants, who were both spoiling for a fight after being in a room full of alpha energy for several hours. They were both on edge, and it wouldn’t take much to push them over the cliff to disaster for everyone in the room. Benedict was strong, probably as strong as his father, and if he lost control, the battle between them would change the path of their Pack.

Lyla stood in the doorway to their bedroom, watching with wide eyes as Duncan glared at his son. “It’s an archaic law, one rarely used. I didn’t anticipate that Simon would pull it out for these proceedings. And I don’t need to explain myself to you, boy. Remember who your Alpha is.”

Duncan’s voice rang with authority, and Trent and Sloane’s legs shook with the need to collapse to their knees, to submit to their Alpha. After a moment of the two glaring at each other, the pressure in the room eased, and she could take a breath. But Benedict wasn’t backing down, his gaze still locked on his father’s, bordering on a challenge.

Sloane took a couple of steps forward, feeling like she was walking through molasses on a cold January day. She laid a hand on Benedict’s back. His muscles were locked like boulders under the fancy suit that he’d worn like armor that morning. She stroked along his spine and leaned into him until, after a few tense moments, he shuddered, released his gaze and looked down at her, his muscles easing slightly. She noted Lyla had done the same for her mate.

Benedict angled his head to the side, baring his throat to his father to show his submission, and his father gave a slow nod of acceptance. The tension released in the room, like the pop of a cork, and it seemed like everyone started to breathe again. Duncan strode to the loveseat and sat down, his mate sitting next to him, both looking troubled.

Benedict took the couch, pulling Sloane down next to him, not even hiding the fact that they were more than a team.
