Crocker was not the only British commander to grumble about the Canadians. In early September Major General ‘Bubbles’ Barker, commanding 49th Division, complained about how the British role in First Canadian Army was passed over. After advancing on Le Havre he wrote in his diary:

4 Sept: I’m fed up learning that the Canadians are mopping up the Le Havre peninsula and have asked JC [Crocker] to have it stopped and merely have credit given where due. The 49 Div have done everything and got across the Seine under very difficult circumstances.
