“Good evening,” said Mrs Von Bat. She was wearing a cream ballgown, decorated with white lace, and looked as if she’d strolled out of a costume drama. “We were just commenting on how much of an improvement all this is.”

“Although the theatre was nice as well,” added Mr Von Bat.

“Nonsense,” said Mrs Von Bat. “It was just a lot of silly pretending.”

Maud noticed Mr Von Bat blushing under his pale make-up. Although everyone at Rotwood thought he was a real vampire, she knew he was really just a human with plastic fangs and a cape.

“Let’s sneak into the rest of the hotel,” whispered Maud to Paprika. “Everyone’s so busy chattering they won’t notice.”

Maud and Paprika found a door in one corner of the foyer and snuck down the corridor that used to lead to the backstage area of the theatre.

She’d visited the theatre just a few weeks ago to watch a production of Dracula, and the corridor had been damp and bare, with brick walls and a dusty floor. Now it had thick red carpets and mirrored walls with the ‘PP’ logo etched on them.

“I went around to Mr Prenderghast’s house today,” said Maud. “Dad had to fix one of his cars.”

“I bet it was monstrous,” said Paprika. “He’s got stacks of cash.”

“It was pretty cool,” said Maud. “But there’s something really strange about him. And Penelope was being even weirder than usual, too. I saw a letter in her room that I think was meant for the Head. I’m pretty sure it was a warning about the inspection.”

Paprika gasped. “And Penelope stole it?”

“I think so,” said Maud.

“Imagine if the Head found out,” said Paprika. “Penelope would pretty much have to move into the detention dungeon for good.”

The door flew open, and Penelope came in and scowled at them.

“I might have known you two party poopers would be skulking around somewhere,” said Penelope. “Anyway, you need to come back to the entrance hall. It’s time to toast my uncle for being such an extremely brilliant man.”
