I debrief later with Hugo.

“Well, you’re here, so at least he didn’t kill you.”

“No, Hugo, he didn’t kill me. He didn’t do a lot of anything, actually. He said he had to go to the studio and do his show, and he wanted me to go home and think about what I had done.”

“Think about what you’ve done? That’s a pretty lame punishment. Last time you got jailed for two months! I have to say, you’re really plummeting into insignificance.”

“Maybe I’m still significant, wise guy, and the doctor is just a nicer guy than you thought.”

“That’s a good point,” Alfalfa adds. “Doc has his good points. And he wants to be your friend.”

“You think?”

“I think.”

“I think, too. But I think other things than what you think,” Hugo says.

“Like what?”

“Like I think none of us know what’s up with the doc, least of all you.”

“I think you’re right,” I say. I think I need to sleep or my head is going to explode. “Hugo, I want you to lie right here next to my bed, and don’t leave all night. Alfalfa, go to sleep, and don’t say anything until tomorrow morning. I am going to sleep on this, and if nobody messes with my brain between now and breakfast, I’ll have a clearer sense of everything. Right?”

“Right,” Alfalfa says enthusiastically.

Hugo doesn’t say anything.

Instead, he snores.
