Next, we save to make big purchases. Unfortunately, credit cards have allowed us to make big purchases without saving first; it shouldn’t be this way. Big purchases like a new car, an upgraded laptop, or a vacation should be paid for with the cash that you saved up. Houses and college should also be paid for with as much cash as you can throw at it. For a house, if they recommend putting 10% down, put 20% down instead. Or for college, if you are planning to take a $20K loan, stretch to reduce that amount to $10K.
