Needless to say, these actions flew in the face of the terms of peace established by the Treaty of Madrid, and Henry Morgan was at last summoned to London to answer for his actions. Ironically, having rode out a storm in a teacup, the legendary buccaneer was to be knighted and commended for his loyalty and spirited defense of His Majesty’s interests in the West Indies. Thus honored, he returned to Jamaica with the rank of Custos, or “protector” of Port Royal, and Judge of the High Court of the Vice-Admiralty. In 1674, he returned to Jamaica, this time with an appointment as Jamaica’s lieutenant-governor.
