Unilever had a problem
So what did Unilever do? What problem-solving methodology did they deploy? We encounter problems all the time in our business and personal lives. But if you were to walk up to someone on the street, Jay Leno style, and ask what problem-solving tactic he or she would use when encountering a problem, I imagine you’d hear crickets.
The Expert Designed Single Solution Method
The Expert Designed Single Solution Method is the most common solution I have seen: “Let’s hire an expert, and they will tell us exactly what to do, and it will work the first time.” Wrong. Nothing ever works the first time. And Unilever did just that. The company hired some really smart mathematicians and physicists to design a new nozzle. They put a lot of effort into the task, but, despite all their knowledge, the new nozzle produced only mediocre results.
