The power dissipation per gate in the case using of JJ typically ranges between 0.1 and 1 W for standard RSFQ. Static power dissipation may be reduced by an order of magnitude if reduced static power RSFQ (Mukhanov 2011; Yamanashi et al. 2007). Even for standard RSFQ, the dissipated energy per gate cycle is typically in the range of 10–10 J and hence by several orders of magnitude lower than for semiconductor devices.

Thus, the most outstanding properties of RSFQ logic is that it is possible to develop extremely low power high speed circuits at the typical feature sizes of m range. As reported by the ITRS (2005) RSFQ technology is among the technologies with lowest risk that can deliver these unique properties. However, superconductor electronics is not intended to replace general purpose semiconductor electronics but to provide special purpose high end solutions and digital signal processing that are unaccessible for semiconductor electronics (Brake et al. 2006).
