Epilogue

“THAT’S NOT ME.”

Jodie stood in her room at Rutherford House pointing at her reflection in the mirror. The woman pointing back at her wore an ivory-colored silk sheath that fell to her ankles. A headband of white roses and mistletoe held a mist of veil in place. It was nearly midnight on New Year’s Eve, and she could hear the muffled sound of the musicians practicing Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March.”

“Of course, it’s you. You’re lovely,” Irene said as she fluffed out the veil. “And it’s almost time. Just about everyone in town has turned out for this wedding.”

“Oh, my,” Jodie said, pressing a hand to her stomach. “I don’t think I can go through with it.”

Sophie started for the door. “Bridal jitters. I’ll get the Scotch.”

“No,” Jodie said as she continued to stare at the mirror. The only thing she could recognize about the woman staring back at her was the fear in her eyes. “You don’t understand. Shane is marrying the wrong person. And he’s hired the wrong person to work in his firm.” She pointed to the mirror again. “He’s in love with her, not me. She’s the bounty hunter.”

“Nonsense.” Sophie moved toward her and took one of her hands.

Irene took the other one. “You’re the one who caught Billy.”

“What if that was a fluke?” Jodie asked. “What if I can’t do it again? And now that Shane has given me a position in his security firm, I could go down in history as a bounty hunter who could only catch one man.”

“That’s not true,” Sophie said. “You caught Shane.”

“That’s number two already,” Irene added.

Sophie patted the hand she was holding. “Remember today’s motto: Step Into the New Year as a Whole New You. The woman you see in the mirror is the new you—Mrs. Shane Sullivan.”

Jodie shot a quick look at the door.

“If you’re thinking of making a break for the attic and climbing down that tree, forget it,” Sophie advised. “He’d catch you.”

“You love him, don’t you?” Irene asked.

Jodie nodded. That was the one true thing she could hold on to. Flanked by the two older women, the bride in the mirror was beginning to look a little more familiar. As the butterflies in her stomach settled, she could almost recognize herself. Blinking back a tear, she said, “I’m going to miss you.”

“No, you’re not,” Sophie said firmly. “Shane has already booked this room one weekend a month for the next year.”

“He has?” Jodie asked.

“Said he didn’t want you to get lonesome, but I think he wants to supervise some of the renovations we’re making with that reward money. If you ask me, he’s developed a taste for being a handyman.”

A knock sounded on the door, and the two women quickly stepped in front of Jodie.

“Shane Sullivan, if that’s you…” Sophie began.

“It’s just us,” Shane’s father said as he opened the door and drew Shane’s mother into the room. Jodie had made sure that Shane invited them to the wedding. Tall and debonair, Alexander Sullivan reminded Jodie of Sean Connery right down to his Scotish accent.
