Chapter Thirteen

Daniel was a coward.

That was it, plain and simple.

Zoe couldn’t be more perfect for him. She was bright and fun. She could roll with the punches, and his family loved her.

There shouldn’t be any issues holding him back.

But there were.

Zoe wasn’t interested in him, and that truth tore at him body and soul. She was already planning their breakup when they weren’t even really together. That was how much she wanted to get away from him.

The worst part?

Even if he couldn’t claim her for himself, he still wanted an excuse to spend time with her, and that desire would never be satiated if he alienated her. He couldn’t push her into an awkward situation and threaten the friendship they had brewing.

He stormed through the front door of the resort, ignoring any calls toward him as he headed for the elevators. Right now, he wasn’t in the mood to be cheerful. It didn’t matter that the resort smelled like gingerbread or that merry music played over the intercom. He didn’t care about the Christmas decorations or the pine garlands that were strung literally everywhere.

The only thing he cared about was Zoe and how he’d ruined everything when he’d asked her to be his fake girlfriend.

Daniel made it to the elevator, ready to fully disappear until he could get his head on straight, when he bumped into his father.

John had always been the quiet one, silently judging or taking things in while his mother couldn’t seem to contain herself. They were a perfect match if there ever was one. Daniel jumped back rather than entering the metal box.

“Dad? What are you doing here? Isn’t there an activity planned somewhere since the dinner was interrupted?”

His father pointed upward. “They’re doing a fake drive-in movie in one of the big entertainment rooms upstairs. Your mother wanted me to see if they had any Skittles in the convenience shop down here.”

Daniel glanced over toward the reception desk. “I’m sure they have something she’d like.”

They stood there awkwardly for a few minutes. Clearly, his father wanted to say something, but he didn’t have the talent that his mother had for speaking her mind.

Shifting his weight from one foot to the other, Daniel offered his dad an empathetic smile. “Anything I can help you with? I don’t really work inside, I’m more of the horse guy, but I can probably find someone who can help.”

John shook his head. “I don’t need anything.”

“Oh, okay.” He shifted again.

“Zoe…”

Daniel shot a quick look toward his father.

“She’s real nice.”

“Yeah, I think so.” Daniel scrutinized his father but still couldn’t figure out what he might be trying to say.

“I think you two would be real good together.”

Daniel chuckled. “I couldn’t agree with you more.” And he meant it. The more time he spent with her, the more he wanted this fake relationship to be real. He wanted her to come to his hotel room and confess that she’d started to develop feelings for him and wanted him to take her out on a real date.
