The Healing Tree

A year had pasted and the March winds had started to blow in the warm windy breezes making a path for Spring to come in. The flowers were in bloom and the buds on the trees were starting to be visible.

A tree was in early bloom and had been saturated in prayers. It was given to the young woman by the women of the Sisterhood. She was responsible for the life of that tree. My grandmother told my mother that either the young woman could take care of that tree and help it to grow or she could let it die in her sorrows. The young woman's smile was all the evidence that anyone needed to prove that she was still full of life on the inside and had not succumbed to hate and bitterness. My grandmother said that the roots of hate and bitterness did not catch hold of the young woman's soul. She was still alive on the inside.

Soon, better days had come for the young woman. With the help of the old women, she had come out of the silent shell that held her captive over a period of time. Looking at her then and looking at her now, showed me that her situation seemed to have had her life on pause. Laughter streamed from her as she started showing her children the affection they so desperately needed. She had started to engage in conversations, but kept some subjects at a distance. When she would speak to me, I would get so happy, hug her tight and then run off, hoping I didn’t offend her. The young woman had also started to cook and soon began to cook every Sunday for the old women and their families.

One morning, my grandmother got me up early to go by Ms. Callie’s house. She said the Sisterhood had to go and get the young woman ready for her new job. They had helped her find work at the general store in town. My grandmother had coached me sternly not to be asking any questions and make sure the children stayed out of the way. My answers were “Yes ma’am” for the entire walk. I could see the excitement and joy in my grandmother’s face as she took each step with pride and confidence. She had a little pep in her step too and a sense of pride that went along with the strong look on her face.

When we arrived, the house was filled with laughter and loud conversations of old women. My mother was there with her hairdressing skills, dressing up the young woman’s hair, making her look like a new woman. The old women of the Sisterhood had gotten together and bought fabric material so Ms. Bertha Mae could make the young woman a new dress. I was excited and yet, I knew that I would be around the house all day with my grandmother to help watch the children.

With all the women gathering around the young
