CHAPTER 13

It was our first night out to O’Connell’s in weeks. The girls and I went ahead, anxious to blow off steam. The boys would join us later after some ‘real cool’ testing that Pax was running with the rover prototype. I wasn’t sure if ‘the boys’ included Elir yet or not.

As I expected, the conversation immediately started with “the hallway incident” as it was now called. Kara and Locks were the only girls of ‘the girls’ present for said incident.

“I have never seen something so erotic in my life. And trust me this is quite an accomplishment.”

“It was just a walk, Locks.”

“Just a walk, my ass. I nearly jumped both of you in that hallway. I mean you know I love you, but I didn’t know I loved you like that.” We laughed.

“I’ve always admired you, Thera. I mean, I’m sure we all have.” The table nodded. “I have never wanted to be you so bad in my entire life. ”

“Kara, this is-” Kara cut me off, which is something Kara never does.

“In that hallway, you were a goddess.” I know she was giving me a compliment. A very high compliment. But I paled, struggling to keep the edges of my visions from shrinking like an aperture narrowing.

“Look, guys. I realized what it may have looked like, but we are Warriors, not PLs, not Timeless. It’s possible this stuff just affects us differently. Maybe we need additional test subjects.” I said with a conspiratorial grin.

“Ha! Like Elir would ever.” Kara balked.

“What do you mean? He seems to be a reasonable man, er, God of science or at least God of scientific method.”

It was Wings who spoke next.

“Thera, I don’t know what kind of history you guys have. You seem to have a love-hate relationship thing happening. But as a woman, I’m not sure he’s interested in focusing his “powers” on anyone else.”

I started to flush, oxygen seemed to evaporate from the very atmosphere.

“What in the world are you talking about, Wings? He doesn’t treat me any differently than any of you.”

I was met with a quiet group of stares.

“OK.” Locks said. “I recognize you are sitting on the inside of this. I have been there, too. Let me explain to you what we see. He is pleasant to all of us, even kind and charming. But there is a look he reserves for only you, and there is a voice he reserves for only you. Call me crazy, but if a man like that, look at me that way OR spoke to me that way, you would have to have me locked up to keep me off him. I can’t imagine be subjected to both simultaneously.”

“You all are entitled to your opinions, of course. But I think you are being taken in by his physical magnificence. As you said, I knew him before his assignment as Ambassador. I’m certain this is all just a facade. Don’t forget, ladies, in addition to the God of Sex, he is also the God of Tricks and Mischief.
