Chapter 25
Abuela is adamant that I should not go next door today so I call Gina and tell her I canât make it. Sheâs really sweet and tells me to feel better and not to worry about Freckles because heâll be fine. I know sheâs right, but I canât stop thinking about him and all the ways he reminds me of Amarilis. It feels weird to compare my sister to a dog, since thatâs supposed to be a not-nice thing to do, but I know itâs actually the best compliment ever. I mean, is any human as great as a dog? I think about how I was kind of mad at Freckles when I first met him, just like I was upset when Amarilis started acting weird. Then I found out Freckles had been abused and I was patient with him. I worked hard to help him, and now he is much better and he even seems happy. But the first step with Frecklesâthe one taken by the rescue groupâwas getting him away from the people who were mean to him and hit him with leashes.
So I have to get Amarilis away from Rich. Then Iâll be able to help her too.
Papi and Jacinto get home as I finish eating a bowl of sancocho. âYou couldnât wait for us, squirt?â Jacinto points to my empty bowl.
Abuela caresses my head and pats my back. âThis is a light snack for now. She was sick today and couldnât eat before. Are you hungry, papito?â
âNah, I need to shower first.â
âYou sure do.â I pinch my nose.
Jacinto takes off his sweaty T-shirt and tosses it on my head.
âEwww!â
âOkay, you two, thatâs enough!â Papi laughs. âGet cleaned up, Jacinto.â He hands the shirt back to my brother.
After Jacinto goes upstairs, I turn to Papi. âWill you drop me off at Zoeâs for a little while? She said sheâll give me the homework and explain what I missed in class today.â
âCertainly, what time?â
âNow?â
âOkay, letâs go!â
I jump up and head to the door. âWait, I need my backpack.â I run upstairs and grab the envelope with Callieâs and Amarilisâs notes, stuff it into my bag, and come back down.
âShould she be doing all this running around after being sick today?â Abuela is saying to Papi.
Usually when it comes to health issues, Papi does whatever Abuela says, like slathering Vicks VapoRub all over our chests and noses whenever we get the tiniest cold. I bite my lip and hope he doesnât change his mind now. âItâs not running around, Doña Marta. Sheâs going to sit at a friendâs house and talk about their classes.â Thank goodness Papi is obsessed with school.
Once weâre in the car and buckled in, I wonder how Iâm going to sneak over to Callieâs, what Iâll say to Zoe, whether I should tell Papi since it wasnât fair of Amarilis to make me promise not to tellâ
âHow is science class coming along?â
âHuh?â
âScience? Remember, the class youâre getting an A in this quarter?â He chuckles.
