Action Items

• Identify and label the physical sensations and emotions that are related to stress and anxiety.

• Decouple stressful cognitions about life and running. Stay with the thoughts for a moment and figure out whether or not the line of thought is productive.

• If you notice that the same anxious thoughts are recycling through your head over and over, interrupt that process by labeling and accepting them without judgement.

• Get the stress off your chest by writing about it in your training journal after a run.

• As you put some distance between the feelings and the thoughts, notice how your body responds. Do you feel your shoulders relax or tension release from your jaw and forehead?

• Remember, some level of stress is normal in training and it serves an important purpose. Exist with your nerves and reframe them as excitement to fuel the competitive fire.
