Chapter 8

Poltergeists and Ghosts: Is It Mind or Spirit?

It is a quiet evening in a typical family home in the suburbs of San Francisco. The mother and father are watching television in the living room with the younger son. The older son, just turning thirteen, comes in the room and tries to get his parents attention; he has something he wants to talk about with them. His father tells him they’ll talk as soon as the show is over. The boy scowls and turns to leave.

Suddenly, they all hear a popping sound above their heads, immediately followed by the sound of water splattering the ceiling. While they are almost directly underneath the splattered water, only a few drops hit their heads, as though the water has spread out on the ceiling in a way it would if it had hit the floor. A moment later, there are sounds of several other pop/splat combinations from the living room down the hallway toward the kitchen.

An elderly woman was now alone in her home. Her husband had died of cancer after a long and protracted illness during which she had to care for him. It was hard to be alone, especially since she had been with him most of her adult life. As she sat in the house thinking over her life, she also experienced much regret, especially with regard to her husband. Not as much regret that he was gone, more that there were things, too many things, in their relationship left ignored and unresolved. She felt anger at him rising, for leaving her with so much unsaid. Then she felt guilty for the anger.

Suddenly, the painting of her husband dropped off the wall with a loud crash. This was immediately followed by several small crashes around the house, the sounds of glassware bursting or falling on the floor. Yet again, she apologized to the “spirit” of her husband for her anger and asked him to stop throwing things around.

The investigator sat in the couple’s living room, listening to them describe the flights of objects, books, and knickknacks, as they seemingly moved around the house of their own accord. He asked them if there was anything happening, any point or points of stress that they can say began about the same time the objects started their movements.

The couple began arguing about the husband being laid off and not really looking for a job, as well as the wife taking up smoking again because of the stress. The investigator sat quietly as the argument progressed, waiting for an opportune time to step in and stop it. The couple, however, appeared to have forgotten he was there.

Suddenly, a large ashtray on the coffee table slid across its surface and fell to the floor. The investigator got on his hands and knees and checked the ashtray, then the table, for any form of rigging, just on the odd chance that the couple was trying to fake him out.
