“We go in there?” Jane asked.
Tuck nodded. “Tuckerman Agency Headquarters. There’s nobody around right now. Lyndon gave everyone who wasn’t in the field the Thanksgiving holiday off. Anyway, state your mission, and then we can go through. Be quick. The zipper doesn’t stay open long.”
Jane tugged at one side of the zipper. The air around it rippled, as if a curtain were being pulled back from a window.
“State your mission,” said Tuck.
“My mission is to get us all out of Ogregon.” Jane pulled the zipper wide and extended her leg into the space. It took on a fuzzy quality, like bad television reception.
“Whoa! I’m fizzy!”
“You’ll solidify once you’re all the way in,” Tuck assured her.
And that is what happened. As Jane stepped through the zipper, her entire body fizzed like freshly poured ginger ale. For a moment, she was little more than a golden ghost. Then, as she moved deeper into the paneled room, she grew solid again. She turned and waved. “It’s fine, Ernesto. C’mon, Little Dude!”
Milo watched as Ernesto took Little Dude’s hand and they stepped through the effervescent light and into the Tuckerman Agency office.
“¡Que chido!” Ernesto gave Jane a high-five. “That was awesome!”
“¡Patito!” squealed Little Dude.
“I’m coming,” said Milo.
“¡Patito!” Little Dude said again, tears filling his eyes. He said something else to Ernesto and waved a finger not at Milo, but at the turkey nesting in the dust.
“He doesn’t want to leave the bird behind,” Ernesto translated.
Milo turned to Gilgamesh. It might not be as good as becoming a Tuckerman Agent, but he could still contribute something. He could save this giant bird for Little Dude.
“Will it fit through the zipper?” he asked Tuck.
“The space stretches,” said Tuck. “But we don’t have time—”
Milo was already at the turkey’s side. “Come on, Gilgamesh,” he said. “Let’s go.”
The turkey did not budge.
Milo ran behind the bird and pushed against its tail feathers. “Giddyup!” he said. Gilgamesh neither giddied nor upped. Tuck, however, guffawed.
“You think you’re so smart?” said Milo from behind the bird. “You try it.”
The Head of the Tuckerman Agency clapped her hands. “Come,” she said, as if calling a naughty spaniel.
Wurble, said Gilgamesh, though he did not move.
“I said, come!” Tuck commanded, twice as loudly.
The turkey scrambled backwards, pinning Milo to the wall. “You’re scaring him!” called Milo through feathers.
“Hey, bird!” Tuck flapped her arms, running full-speed toward the cornered turkey. “Get moving!”
Gilgamesh, who was not used to being addressed in such a manner, flapped as well and darted away.
“¡Patito!” called Little Dude.
Milo turned toward the voice—and the zipper. “It’s closing! Tuck! Run!” he yelled, but before either could move, the ring reached its apex and the silver light dissolved.
“We missed it,” said Milo, staring at the space where the zipper had once been.
Tuck shrugged. “It’s just as well. Saves me the firing paperwork.”
“What do you mean?”
“She didn’t complete her mission, did she? She was supposed to get all of us out of Ogregon and she failed. Poof! No more zipper privileges.”
“That wasn’t her fault,” said Milo.
