THE STEPS TO CREATING THOUGHT LEADERSHIP
While it may seem that people in the forefront of their field, by acclimation, arrived there through some natural gravitational pull of raw talent, I’ve found that to be rare. In fact, most arrived by methodical means. They may not all be able to articulate—or choose to articulate—the means, but there are common steps, nonetheless.
Marshall Goldsmith, the preeminent coach, told me that he learned to “hang out” with thought leaders if you want to be like them. He used to, literally, carry Peter Drucker’s briefcase. He met a great many influential people while at Drucker’s side, and was identified with him. Not long ago, Marshall was awarded the top award from a leadership institute that was once called the Drucker Leadership Institute.
I’d add that Marshall is relentlessly generous. He provides help, testimonials, endorsements, and advice to peers on a constant basis, and this also establishes him in my mind as an avatar.
First, ask yourself this question: How well known are you in your field at the moment?
10: Widely acclaimed in your niche or specialty
7: Acknowledged by many within your group of influencers
4: Rarely identified
1: Can’t get arrested
This applies to your national or global standing in your particular field. The average of all the people who have responded to this question in my Thought Leadership Conferences is 3.4!
Digression: The familiarity and respect for your contributions must be outside of your community, not because you’re known well there, but because of the observation of St. Mark’s Gospel (6:4): A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.
