Help

Mildred was ready for work but didn’t need to sign in for a couple hours, so she stopped at Ruby’s beauty shop and got a haircut. Luckily, Ruby wasn’t busy and with no wait, there was plenty of extra time. A short walk to the mall and Mildred strolled stores. She wanted some new jeans and a pair of pajama pants with working elastic. Surprised, Mildred found she was down a pants size, probably a perk due to all the walking at work.

As she wandered the ladies’ department, Mildred kept reminding herself that this was just personal maintenance; there were no plans. Mildred finally found herself in the lingerie. She thought, maybe, some underwear from this decade. A half hour slipped past, much longer than expected due to the dramatic change of styles. Mildred couldn’t understand who would choose to wear a thong. They looked like lacy torture, much like a bathing suit she had had in second grade that didn’t stay put. It took a while to find panties that were pretty and didn’t reside in her behind. But it was finally accomplished, along with two lovely bras from the clearance rack.

After locking two large shopping bags in the trunk, she had to rush to work. G-Ma on the floor.

There was an immediate response. Gotcha.

Larry?

Yes.

She called in on her cell. “Larry, is Arnie in yet?”

“No, he isn’t, but he said he will be by eight. Do you want to leave a message?”

Mildred hesitated for a moment. “No. I need to talk to you privately. Do you have a minute?”

“All’s quiet. On my way. Meet you in interrogation.” The phone went quiet, and Mildred walked over. When she arrived, Larry was already there unlocking the door. “What is the deal-e-o?”

“I want to be sure this is only between us.”

“No problem. My lips can seal up.” Larry pinched his mouth closed.

Mildred sat on the edge of the table. “Here is the deal. Arnie isn’t doing well with his dad’s death. He acts like it’s just another day, but it isn’t.”

Larry looked at her, nodding in agreement, he then said, “I know he showed up to work the next night, early. I’ve been worried. He said that everything was planned and it wasn’t any surprise.”

Mildred went on. “Yeah, his dad had suffered from Alzheimer’s for years and it had accelerated.”

“Mildred, this is all general knowledge. Why are we whispering in a private room?”

Mildred blushed and continued to speak softly. “He has spent the last two nights at my house. He can’t seem to be able to go home.”

Larry stared at her with questions evident on his face.

“It is not what you think, so don’t worry.” Larry nodded but struggled to not tease. “I got him to go to his place this afternoon and I offered to help. The living room is like a hospital with a bed, and medical equipment and supplies.” She stopped for a moment. “Just mentioning straightening up caused him to nearly collapse. He only recovered when I hinted at magic spells and a group of elves.
