The next morning Mikis and Tsaki were waiting beneath the sycamore tree. They had been standing there for a quarter of an hour by the time Elena got there. It wasn’t because she was late. Mikis had arrived way too early, because he was so excited.

If Grandpa didn’t even want to put a window in the dark, musty stable, then Tsaki might as well forget about a completely new stable. They would have to find a different way to cheer up Tsaki. They were going to go out and find her a friend, and Mikis knew just the place to look.

In a field beside the road to the beach lived a donkey belonging to Kostas, who had a restaurant down by the sea. He used to get the donkey to move things across the sand for him. But now he had a big Jeep and he didn’t need the donkey anymore. If we go visit Kostas’s lonely donkey, we’ll make two donkeys happy, Mikis thought.

Tsaki walked along behind Mikis and Elena. They didn’t need the rope, because Tsaki followed Mikis wherever he went. Her hoofs tapped happily along the road. She took a good look around. She could do that now that she didn’t have to carry any heavy baskets and now that no one was telling her to keep on walking.

Halfway there, Tsaki suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. She sniffed the air and then she started to bray. She brayed so loudly that Mikis and Elena had to cover their ears. When she stopped, she stood there, with her head raised and her ears high.
