Ty watched the woman sleeping in his arms. He could almost hear the words Ryan wanted to say, but knew he held silent for the same reason Ty did—he didn’t want Mikayla to hear how worried they were for her safety. For some reason, despite all of the problems they’d faced over the last few years, this time it felt different.

Even Lachlan and Bryce were on edge. They both hid it well, but Ty had seen the changes in his brothers. They weren’t the relaxed, confident men they’d been on the other planets. Ty ran his fingers through Mikayla’s hair and touched her face softly. She wriggled, still asleep, and turned her cheek into his hand.

And it suddenly became obvious why his brothers were on edge.

This time Mikayla was the specific target. The threat wasn’t a few dumb-ass raiders willing to risk injury to steal mouse tears, or even 46

religious fanatics trying to frame them for murder. This time the threat was from a man who’d already endangered Mikayla once before, and who wouldn’t hesitate to kill her to gain his own freedom.

Ty wrapped his arms more tightly around his wife. Ryan shifted slightly and gave him a look that confirmed he knew exactly what Ty was thinking. They would protect her to their dying breaths simply because they didn’t want to live life without her.

Chapter Five

The station’s proximity alarm screeched suddenly.

Lachlan abandoned his paperwork, grabbed his weapons, and bolted down the hallway. He reached the surveillance room to find Bryce staring intently at the camera feeds. Lachlan glanced at his brother, and concern that Bryce hadn’t seemed to have slept in days washed through him. In some ways he hoped this alarm did bring trouble. If they could neutralize the danger, they’d all sleep more easily.

Lachlan quickly took a seat at the communications console and cut off the warning alarm mid shriek. It didn’t mean the danger was past. It was simply so he could hear any outside dangers more clearly.

After a few minutes of studying the monitors in tense silence, Lachlan and Bryce were able to identify the incoming craft as a standard courier vehicle. It sure as hell didn’t mean it was a standard courier vehicle, but they had no wish to scare the shit out of the poor mailman if that’s all he was.

“I’ll go,” Bryce said, but Lachlan shook his head and pushed away from the desk.

“I’ve got it,” he said as he left the room and headed out the back door of the station. He reset the shield and alarms for that door and then jogged to the backdoor of the farmhouse. He made it into the living area by the time the courier landed in the front yard. It almost seemed ridiculous that a simple unexpected delivery could cause so much tension, but with the possible threat that Mikayla and Tracey faced, none of them were willing to accept anything at face value.
