Chapter 5
âYouâll be in the town square around nine PM, right?â Steve paced the space between his bed and the closed bedroom door. âGreat. Yeah, two cameras and leave the rest to me. I have the proof. Sheâll have no choice.â He flipped his cellphone closed and shoved it in the pocket of his shorts.
The twenty-first of June was the longest day of the year, and the time of the townâs summer celebration. Steve collapsed on the bed. Just before the fireworks were scheduled to go off, he planned to unmask Zoeâs secret to the nation.
He punched his pillow a couple of times. As soon as heâd arrived back at the boardinghouse last night, heâd climbed in his car and driven to the next town over until he found a one-hour photo lab. Luckily, the teen running the place appeared more interested in the comic book he was reading than the pictures. Steve left without any questions or harassment regarding the photosâ nature.
Now, as he scanned the glossy prints, confliction held his mind in a vice. He should be excited. This was his chance, his ticket to a valid journalism job, because he had actual proof. The trouble? He could no longer deny his attraction to Zoe, but neither could he ignore her paranormal identity.
With a groan, Steve sat up and swung his legs over the side of the bed, planting his feet on the floor. There was one person in town he needed to talk to, and heâd put it off too long.
He sneaked into the hall, making doubly sure neither the landlady nor Zoe was in sight. Relief shuddered through him. He slammed down the stairs and out the front door. Never had the three blocks to the bakery seemed so long or so dreaded. Every step he took made his head ache. Heâd made a fool of himself the last time he saw this woman, and he wouldnât be surprised if she refused to speak with him now, but he had to try.
Bells on a leather strip tinkled, announcing his arrival as he opened the door to Just Cookies. The scent of vanilla assaulted his nose and made his mouth water. Still too early for the lunch crowd, the small collection of colorful two-seater tables was mostly unoccupied. Steve had no trouble navigating his way to the counter but stumbled when a tall woman turned and the dark fringe of hair flared about her shoulders--obviously not Jinx.
âMrs. Wiggins.â The last person on earth he wanted to see. His heart plummeted into his shoes.
âSteve.â She nodded to a petite redhead behind the counter. âJust send my order back with Mr. Compton.â Turning back to Steve, her gray eyes lit with mischief. âBe sure to balance your karma, young man. Youâll never be sorry you did.â
Relief washed over him. At least she wouldnât hassle him in front of the baker. âThanks, Mrs. W.â He waited until she cleared the door before giving his full attention to the frowning woman covered from neck to knee with a pink apron.
