Getting Bria back to his room was the only thing on Jax’s mind as he navigated down the rough mountain road. Okay, it wasn’t the only thing on his mind. In fact, the last time they’d been in his truck driving on that very same road was also forefront in his mind. But he needed to focus and he was done with quickies in the truck or sex under the stars. This time he wanted her on his bed, where he could take his time with her.

He was so busy trying to keep his desire in check, it took him a few minutes to realize she’d fallen silent. He glanced over. Bria stared out the window at the dark forest. “You okay?”

She nodded and turned toward him, but he couldn’t quite make out the expression on her face in the dark. “I’m good. I was just thinking about how incredible tonight was. I can’t believe all the time and—”

“It was impressive. Who would have thought Slade Black could be so romantic?” He tried to laugh off the serious atmosphere in the truck, and Bria joined in, but he could tell her heart wasn’t in it. “Women like that romance stuff, huh?”

“Yes. I mean…most do.”

“Not you?”

She shook her head. “No. I’ve never been much of a softie like that. I don’t need all that relationship stuff.”

“Relationship stuff? Or romance stuff?” The idea that Bria was a loner like himself disturbed him, and he couldn’t quite figure out why. Maybe it was because from the moment he’d met her, he’d somehow stopped thinking of himself as a loner. And the more time he spent with her, the more time he felt as though he might be coupled up. And stranger still, instead of freaking him out, he kind of liked it. All of which was ridiculous, anyway, considering they hadn’t even known each other a month.

“Aren’t they the same thing?”

“Not at all.” She turned to face him, the smile that he’d grown to love lighting up her face once again. “You can be romantic without a relationship.”

“But wouldn’t someone be more inclined to be romantic to someone they were in a relationship with?”

She shrugged. “Honestly, I wouldn’t know either way.”

The thought that Bria had never experienced a romantic moment or a relationship stopped him. More than that, the desire to give her both surprised him with its intensity. He had no business saying anything, or making a promise he certainly couldn’t keep, but it didn’t stop him from asking, “What would you say about it?”

“About what? Romance? Or a relationship?”

“Either.”

She didn’t answer right away but after a moment, she squeezed her eyes shut for just a fraction of a second, as if she might actually be considering what he was really asking. Her lips parted but no sound came out and she closed them again.

“Well?”

“I’m not sure what you’re asking.”

He pulled into the staff parking, took the truck out of gear and faced her. “I think you know exactly what I’m asking.” The truth was Jax didn’t really know what he was asking himself.
