I’ve spent the better part of my morning rebuilding the carburetor for my Camaro. It’s just another step toward getting this beauty on the road. The fuel filter was leaking under the intake manifold and since that can be dangerous on top of wasting fuel, I decided to immerse myself in the task.

Did it need to be done today? No. But does it keep my mind off Kat and how I pushed too far with her last night? Also no, but I pretend it does.

I shouldn’t have taunted her. Even knowing it at the time didn’t stop me from flirting. Pride and egotism are too ingrained into my DNA to kill them off completely, though I try my best to stuff them down.

It’s true that fae characteristics are like candy to humans but using those traits to enthrall them goes against everything I stand for. I refuse to be among those who use people just to feed their own ego, build their own power, and wield some kind of sick mastery over the innocent.

And yet, when I tasted the first hint of Kat’s curiosity, it overrode every good intention within me.

In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to lure her in—to set the trap and wait her out. So, does that make me no better than a monster? I grimace at the thought.

I just finish getting the accelerator pump dropped in when I hear a car rumbling up the drive. Trystan already lowered the wards for Kat and Val to enter safely. Had he not, they’d be stonewalled at the entrance to the forest.

I turn toward the garage’s open door where Falke lays on the cold concrete, his ears perked at the sound of our oncoming guests. I rise from the work bench and remove my gloves, wiping the grease from my forearms on the front of my T-shirt.

“Remember what I said, Falke.” My wolf friend cocks his head quizzically. A faint glow of interest lights his golden eyes. “You must be on your best behavior this morning. No jumping or excessive licking.”

After a gruff snort, he falls to his side with an overdramatic huff. I shake my head and exit the garage, waiting for Kat’s car to come into view.

An unexpected flurry of anticipation goes off in my gut. It’s an unwelcome feeling. One that hasn’t plagued me for centuries. Not willing to give it credence now, I force my face into a mask of indifference as Kat’s car slowly rolls up to the house.

True to the rest of Kat’s belongings, her ride is nothing fancy, just a worn-out silver sedan with a dent in the front right side. But it's like her—endearing in a way.

I wait as both sisters emerge from the vehicle, Val looking like she just left a rock concert with her black band tee and ripped jeans that probably cost more than Kat’s car is worth, and Kat looking much the same as I’ve seen her thus far—high-waisted jeans, a zip-up hoodie over top a white T-shirt and that infernal tiny backpack propped on her back.
