As I exited the dealership, I quickly scanned the vehicles around me and didn’t see the same SUV that had been following me earlier. Everything seemed serene. I shrugged off my worries and got into my Buick—mine for one more day—and headed for Daddy’s building downtown.

Checking the mirrors over and over and not seeing anything out of the ordinary, I wondered if Danny had people watching over me like he said he would. His trained men would be invisible until I needed them, he said. I hoped he hadn’t forgotten about me, because I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

Suddenly, a black SUV pulled up beside me, and I recognized it as the same vehicle that had been following me earlier. I tramped on the gas to speed up, but the car behind matched my pace, keeping me trapped between it and the curb.

My heart pounded in my chest realizing I was being boxed in.

Why didn’t I take defensive driving when Daddy wanted me to?

I gave the old Buick more gas, held tight to the wheel and scared myself silly going way too fast on a busy city street. The next thing I knew, the SUV slammed into the side of my Buick.

I lost control and careened to the right. My Buick swerved off the street, jumped the curb and headed straight for a lamppost.

I closed my eyes and screamed. Pedestrians ran for their lives.

Bang.

Was it a gunshot? Nope. That was the sound of my Buick hitting the post.

My car stopped dead and my head hit the steering wheel... hard. I felt warm blood trickling down my face. My nose hurt and I let out a low moan. Was it broken?

As I opened my eyes and tried to regain my senses, I saw two men both wearing jeans, black t-shirts, and black baseball caps. They were running full out to get to me, and I couldn’t tell if they were on the ‘A’ team or the ‘B’ team.

One of them opened my door and gave me his hand. “We work for Danny, Miss Daisy. Leave your car here and we’ll take care of it. We’ll drive you wherever you’re going.”

My heart was thumping so loud in my chest, I could barely breathe. “Where did O’Donnell’s guys go?”

“We scared them off for now, but we got the tag. Not your worry. Come on. We’ve got you.”

“I’m a bit shaky.”

“No doubt. You just hit a post. It’s a wonder your airbag didn’t deploy and blacken your eyes.”

I took his hand, and he helped me out of the car. My legs were shaking, and I could barely stand on my own. The other man opened the door to the SUV, and I got in the back seat. The driver got in the front, and we sped off down the road.

“Do you need a doctor?” the man in the back seat asked me. “You have a bit of blood on your face.”

My hand went to my head where a lump had suddenly come up, and there was a small gash there too.
