CHAPTER EIGHT

Kurt

The next day I think about how it’s a damned good thing I’m not a wolf. I have very good friends who are wolf shifters. One of them, Lance, is as close as a brother, and I love him like family. In fact, in my will, if I die, I’m handing over the guardianship of my son to him. I love him and I have no problem with wolf shifters. However, in a situation like this, a wolf shifter would already be killing Alec Boerstein without any regard for the consequences. Restraint is not the primary characteristic of a wolf.

I certainly want to kill the man.

But I can think things through. My anger at the man for how he hurt Caitlyn is pretty damned overwhelming, but I remind myself of a few things. First of all, what I need to do is make sure Caitlyn and Ellie are protected. That’s a hell of a lot more important than bringing vengeance to that man. Second, I need to think about everyone if I give in to the temptation. Tyler would lose his father at least for a while. He might lose me for more than a while.

When shifters first came out of the shadows, the world was likely as ready as it ever would be since a bunch of idiotic books and movies were made about vampires, werewolves, shifters, and others having wonderfully silly romantic relationships with natural humans. That worked in our favor in some countries.

But there’s something impossible to ignore as a shifter.

Werewolves. Shape-changing sorcerers. Vampires. Boogeymen.

Nearly every iteration of those myths and folktales exists because of a shifter who preyed on humans. That happens so rarely as to be almost nonexistent. Nonetheless, if a human slaughters thirty people and a person who turns into a wolf or a bat kills two, what incident do you think will be passed down for generations?

We are just about every monster in human tradition.

So, when a shifter kills a human today, the shifter community isn’t happy about it. There is restrained acceptance of us in today’s world but all it takes is one or two times for a shifter to kill a man and that tolerance can just disappear and it’s very likely we’ll go back to the shadows. As it stands now, about sixty percent of the shifters in the developed world don’t reveal their nature. In the less developed world, it’s closer to ninety-five percent.

So, not only do I risk going to prison but depending on how things play out, I risk the lion shifter community turning against me as well as just about every other shifter on Earth.

I still want to kill him.

I want it far more than I should.

Which is why Craig, a good friend of mine and the “third Musketeer” with me and Lance, looks at me and says, “I would never give this to Lance and I’m not sure I should give it to you.” Craig is a bear shifter. He’s also the Chief of Police of a small town about fifty miles north of the city.
