***Dulaney***
âYou have to come, Dulaney. Itâs a big deal. We never got to go before you left because we were too young, but weâre old now. We can go together and dance the night away!â
I was terrible at standing up to peer pressure. It was a miracle that I hadnât gotten involved in drugs as a teen. âFine. Fine. Iâll go to the dance.â
âNot the dance, Dulaney. The ball.â
I rolled my eyes, but secretly, I was a little excited. The masquerade ball had been such a huge deal to us as kids. The masks and the dresses had always seemed so grown up and fancy. I couldnât help but tap into that eagerness to go. âFine. Iâll go to the ball.â
Henry came up behind me and rested his hands on my hips. âAre you agreeing to go with someone else to the ball before I get my chance to ask you?â
Maise squealed. âThis is so perfect. Itâs like senior year all over again. You two are as cute as ever and Iâm going to sneak out with Arnie later and hope we donât get caught.â
I couldnât believe the way everyone who saw Henry touching me just grinned and went about their business. After the way weâd ended, Iâd almost expected people to look at me with pity, like I was an idiot who never learned, or to judge us for not following the long-time rules about shifters not mingling with humans. No one seemed surprised or bothered, though. We were old news before we even began.
âSo? You going to go to the ball with me?â Henry ran his nose up the side of my neck, making me shiver.
I pressed my back into him and nodded. âOnly because all the cool kids are going, though.â
His hands slid around to my stomach and his teeth nipped my earlobe. âWould it be in bad taste to ditch this party?â
I watched as a drunk Maise floated over to Arnie and whispered something in his ear that made him blush. âHave we appeased the fairies enough? I like my soul not nibbled on, thank you.â
âI think theyâve been appeased.â His hands trailed higher. âWhat about you, though, Laney? Have you been appeased?â
I swallowed a jolt of need and let myself sink into him completely. âHardly.â
âThen I think itâs imperative that we get you to my house and appease you. What kind of man would I be if I didnât?â He spun me around and smiled. âTell Fiona goodnight.â
I nodded and went off to find her. I was ready to call it a night. I had more sex drive than ever and I had the chance to find heaven with the man I was never going to get over. I had to take my chances and live while I could.
Aunt Fi was on her back porch swing with a handsome older man, her legs across his lap. She saw me and gave me a little finger wave. âGoing to Henryâs?â
I blushed, still unused to being an adult in her house.
