Getting the enemy on the run

Around 595 BC, Clisthenes of Sicyon laid siege to the town of the Crisaeans which received its water through pipes or conduits. Clisthenes cut off the water supply and presumably could have simply waited until dehydration took its toll. Instead, perhaps through impatience or simply a sense of mischief, he added a subtle twist. Once the Crisaeans were really thirsty, he restored the flow. The parched inhabitants happily guzzled the precious liquid, unaware that Clisthenes had spiked it with hellebore, a powerful laxative. With all the defenders incapacitated by diarrhoea, the Sicyonian troops were easily able to storm and capture the town.44
