THE TRIANGLE AND DRUM. A triangular area roughly extending from Ludington to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and down to St. Joseph is known as the Great Lakes Triangle, claiming more ships and planes than the Bermuda Triangle. North of here, from Lakes Michigan to the distant expanses of Huron, is the region of the Ottawa Drum. The mysterious booming sound often heard from somewhere across the lake is said to be tolling the dead. (Courtesy of the Library of Congress.)

ESUOHTHGIL REDRUM. The ghost of Mary Terry is said to haunt the Sand Point Light near Escanaba. She became its first keeper in 1868 after her husband died before the light was completed. She served 18 years and died under mysterious circumstances when the light caught fire in 1886. Signs of forced entry led authorities to suspect she was killed by a burglar who tried to hide the crime by setting the blaze.
