Within a week, Faraday had taken full advantage of this discovery and had found more than 50 substances susceptible to magnetic force, exhibiting the behaviour of either iron or heavy glass; gases, however, eluded him. It was in this context that Faraday introduced the term ‘magnetic field’ into natural philosophy, first in his laboratory notebook on 7 November 1845 and then, with no ceremony, as if it were the most natural term in the world, 11 times in series 20 and 21, his first papers on diamagnetism.
