During the ’60s, however, the popularity of southern Miami Beach waned until, by the mid-’70s, the formerly resplendent hotels had become the ramshackle domain of retirees. In fact, the entire area was scheduled for the wrecking ball until a group of determined preservationists, led by the late Barbara Baer Capitman, fought to save the region by having it designated a National Historic District. The success of this group, the Miami Design Preservation League, is evident today, as South Beach is one of Florida’s most popular tourist attractions.
