“A nyone else need coffee?” Topher asked. “We need to work on music for a while and then we’re taking Sabrina to a restaurant to tell her some news.”

“Tell me now!” the girl demanded.

“Nope.” Topher shook his head. “You pick the restaurant, and we’ll tell you the news.”

“Fine.” Sabrina scowled.

The whole band looked at the little girl with collective wonder, then David pointed at her and exclaimed, “Mini-Topher!”

They all agreed, shaking their heads as they looked back and forth between Topher and Sabrina in awe.

“We can’t be out too late, though. Tomorrow’s a school day for Sabrina,” Melissa said as she toyed with Sabrina’s hair.

“Mo-om !” Sabrina wailed. “We have more decorating to do. I can skip, can’t I, Daddy?” She did her best to make her eyes even bigger and sweeter for her dad.

Sneaky kid.

Melissa covered a grin as Topher's eyes widened. She decided to help him by glowering at him so severely he couldn’t miss her meaning. I’ll emasculate you if you don’t agree with me . He acknowledged the look and faced Sabrina.

“No, Sabrina. You have to go to school. I’m sure Diego and Jess will save things for you to do, right?”

Jess beamed at Sabrina. “Absolutely. Tomorrow afternoon, we’re going to make a haunted house cake.”

Sabrina squealed and jumped up and down. “That sounds awesome!”

“And I’ll be making a fun mocktail called Halloween punch,” Diego added. “I’m going to use my cocktail smoker to make it look creepy.”

“Goody,” Marc said with a frown.

Topher laughed and leaned over to whisper to Melissa, “Marc is the only one who struggles with our sober behavior.”

“I read that you all run sober tours.” Melissa said.

Topher gazed at his friends. “I think Tray has wine every once and a while, and Marc and David drink some, but no one drinks when we’re together.”

David came over and gave the sulking Marc a side hug. “Come on, my dude, let’s head downstairs and get set up.”

“I almost feel sorry for him,” Melissa said as she watched the two long-haired men walk toward the basement.

“Don’t. He chooses not to drink when he is with us. It’s his way of supporting my decision to stay sober. But he does love to play the pity card every now and again,” Topher said.

Topher loved every single member of this band like family. And they clearly reciprocated the feeling.

“Well, let’s get going,” he said. “I have a song about Sadie and how I saved her from the dumpster.”

“Excuse me?” Jess raised her eyebrows. “I found your kitty.”

“Yeah, you found her. But then you were busy getting attacked by your ex-boyfriend, so I saved the cat.”

“What?” Melissa said, mirroring the look on Jess’s face.

“I’ll fill you in on that drama,” Jess said, shaking her head. “I just want to wait until Diego goes downstairs because it still bothers him a lot.”

Diego’s face had turned to stone and the glower he gave Topher was menacing.

It bothers him? What about her?

Holy shit. If Melissa had been attacked by an ex-boyfriend, she would never leave the shelter of her home.
