4.2 Yellow Electrochromism

In the UV-vis spectra of polyCoL1-5, a weak absorption based on the d-d* transition of Co(II) appears around 520 nm (Table 4.1). MLCT absorptions are not observed in these polymers. The absorption coefficient (εmax) of the absorption based on the d-d* transition is markedly reduced by the introduction of methoxy and bromo groups onto the ligand. The redox potential of Co(II)/(III) in the polymers was measured by cyclic voltammetry, but the redox wave was very small. The potential was successfully determined by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) for polyCoL2. Reliable data was not obtained for polyCoL3-5. Regarding the electrochromic properties, the disappearance/reappearance of the absorption due to the d-d* transition was observed in polyCoL1-2 by applying 0.5 or −0.5 V versus Ag/Ag+, respectively. This color change from yellow to colorless was observed. PolyCoL3-5 do not show electrochromism due to the very small absorption of the d-d* transition.Table 4.1Optical and electrochemical properties of Co(II)-based metallo-supramolecular polymers (polyCoL1-5)
