We enter a banquet hall with extravagant chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Each table has beautiful, over-the-top floral centerpieces and a complimentary crystal glass of champagne in front of every seat.
âI didnât know it was this fancy,â I whisper to Hunter.
Our arms are linked together and he pulls me in tighter. âDonât worry, we donât have to stay for too long. I know itâs not your thing.â
Definitely not my thing. I couldnât even deal with being at my prom the entire time, so Hunter and I ended up hanging out at a local park while I was in my gown and he was in his tux.
âWhatâs this dinner for anyway?â
âItâs a special fiftieth anniversary.â
âFiftieth anniversary of what? The fraternity?â
âNo. I zoned out when they were talking about it so I actually donât have a clue. I felt too stupid to ask anyone, so Iâve just been pretending to know what the fuck everyoneâs been talking about for the past few weeks.â A giggle slips out and he chuckles with me. âLetâs get a drink and act as if we know whatâs going on.â
âSounds like a plan.â
My brain has gotten so used to how Iâm supposed to act with Hunter out in public, that itâs become second nature to neglect every sane thought I have while weâre together. And when heâs being nice, itâs even easier.
We spend the hour schmoozing and sipping on expensive drinks. Technically, Hunter does the schmoozing, I stand there and smile. I hate talking to random people and having surface conversation, so Iâm grateful the alcohol is loosening up my nerves.
âThis is Ellie,â Hunter introduces me to yet another alumnus, only thankfully this man doesnât feel the need to stare at my dress and give Hunter a nod of approval.
âNice to meet you, Ellie, Iâm Hank.â He shakes my hand and we talk for a bit about the university and Hankâs good ole days in the fraternity.
âWhat are you studying, Ellie?â Hank asks.
âIâm a philosophy major.â
His eyebrow rises. âA philosophy major?â
I nod, unsure of his reaction.
âAre you liking it?â he inquires.
âI absolutely love it,â I gush. âI even spent the summer abroad studying philosophy.â
âDonât be modest, Ellie,â Hunter interjects, then speaks to Hank. âMy girl got a full scholarship to the abroad program in France and is at the top of her class.â My cheeks redden at the bragging Hunter is doing on my behalf.
âIs that so?â Hank glances at me and I nod again. âWell, if thatâs the case, I might have an interesting internship opportunity for you starting in the fall. My company will be taking over a local nonprofit soon and weâll be looking to hire an intern to help with the ethics and policies. Thereâll be a lot of writing and potential opportunities for presentations, which I can guarantee will look wonderful on your resume.â He reaches into his jacket pocket. âHereâs my card. Reach out by the end of the semester if youâre interested and we can set up an interview.â
I let out a small gasp as I take the card from him.
